Usually no more than 4 feet tall but can reach heights as high 12 feet. It has the largest leaves of any temperate bamboo in cultivation, up to 24 inches long by 4 inches wide. Culm sheaths are persistent. Can grow in shade or sun. It does best in a shady location and adapts well to growing in containers. Leaves are used as food wrappers and in making mats.
